At Brill Coffee, we are always on the lookout for exceptional coffee from around the world. We are thrilled to announce our latest addition, Rwanda Nyarusiza coffee, sourced from the high hills surrounding the Nyarusiza washing station in Rwanda's Southern Province.
This 100% Red Bourbon lot offers a unique and complex flavour profile that will delight any coffee lover. You'll taste notes of redcurrant, grapefruit, and cherry, balanced by hazelnut and black tea. The coffee has a great structure and sweetness, thanks to the meticulous care and attention given during the processing of the beans.
The Nyarusiza washing station was established in 2003 and is the first of four washing stations owned and managed by Buf Coffee, a company that has had a significant impact on the specialty coffee industry in Rwanda. The station sits at an elevation of 1,743m above sea level, overlooking a landscape of vibrant green hills and rich red earth.
The area surrounding the washing station has mineral-rich soil and a lush environment that is well suited to specialty coffee production. The station services around 700 local producers who deliver fresh cherries daily during the harvest period. The farms in Nyamagabe District are typically small, averaging around a hectare (or 300-600 trees), and are situated between 1,800 to 2,000 meters above sea level. Coffee is grown as a cash crop, alongside subsistence food crops like maize, beans, and sorghum, and some livestock like goats and chickens. Cows are also an important asset to a farming family, providing milk and yoghurt for the family, excellent manure for the coffee farms, and an opportunity for additional income.
The coffee at Nyarusiza is processed with meticulous care and attention, resulting in exceptional clarity and cleanliness in the cup. Quality control and day-to-day operations are overseen by the station manager, Celestine Uwizeyimana, and Head of Quality Control, Eugenie Kanakuze. Together, they ensure that the coffee is harvested and processed with care and that production standards are kept at the highest possible level. Nyarusiza typically provides jobs for 60 seasonal workers during the peak harvest and staffs five permanent positions. At the end of each season, any surplus profits are shared with the producers and washing station managers.
Rwanda Nyarusiza coffee offers a unique and rewarding experience for any coffee lover. From the high hills to your cup, you can taste the dedication and care put into every step of the process. We are proud to offer this exceptional coffee on our website and invite you to try it for yourself.
