Sourced from smallholder producers who farm coffee in the high hills surrounding the Nyarusiza washing station, this coffee is grown in the mineral-rich soil and lush environment of Rwanda's Southern Province. The station services around 700 local producers who deliver fresh cherry daily during the harvest period.
The meticulous care and attention given during the processing of the coffee result in exceptional clarity and cleanliness in the cup. Quality control and day-to-day operations are overseen by the station manager and head of quality control, ensuring the coffee is harvested and processed with care and that production standards are kept at the highest possible level.
In addition to providing jobs for seasonal workers during the peak harvest, any surplus profits are shared with the producers and washing station managers. The farms in Nyamagabe District are typically small and situated at high elevations, where coffee is grown alongside subsistence food crops and livestock, including cows, which are an important symbol of wealth and status in Rwanda.
